Linux.com is changing Posted on Monday, January 05, 2009 @ 11:38:34 CET

Recently, Linux.com has announced that it will be changing its format starting with the new year. I popped on this morning and got a bit of a surprise. I tend to visit the site largely for news updates, but when the default page loaded in my browser, I was confronted with a (yet another) discussion forum.
See the Extended Text for the rest of my analysis and visit Linux.com to see what's new with them for yourself.
I belong to way too many forums and other social outlets as it is and being faced with another one, especially with another Linux discussion forum (and how many do we need) was a tad disheartening. Not to rain on the parade of Linux.com, but I don't plan on joining yet another community. That said, they can certainly create such a community and I imagine it will be well visited, but does the forum *have* to open as the default? What about the news?
Turns out their Features and NewsVac Sections can still be accessed in the left hand menu under Feeds (yeah, "I am Vaal. Feed me). The changes must still be progressing, because as of this writing, there is still no new content available.
Maybe I'm just being pessimistic. After all, it *is* Monday, and it was snowing when I tried to commute into work this morning. Those two events alone are bound to put me off a bit.
I'll have to explore their changes as time permits, but I don't know that I would vote for this as an improvement. Please stay tuned. |
