·  On what subjects can I submit news items?

Basically you can submit news items on anything Linux or computer-related. Keep in mind that the focus of this site is Linux, so visitors may not necessarily be interested in news about the latest Microsoft software. However, depending on the topic, discussing Windows or Microsoft in general does not necessarily mean people are not interested.

·  Can I include news items from other sites?

We encourage you to tell others about things that are happening on other sites. However, you must be very careful with simply including news items as reported by other sites. Because of problems we have had in the past, we discourage people from simply copying 1:1 the news items you find on other sites. Even if you give the other site full credit, some people get bent out of shape. So, the safest thing is to visit the page they are referencing and create your own text.

·  What about quoting and "fair use"?

Under US copyright law you are allowed to directly quote contents of copyrighted material for any number of reasons. Although there are enough precedence cases to allow you to include an excerpt in your news item, it is best not to push the issue. You should be able to write a couple of sentences on your own to direct people to another site. However, directly quoting something said by the author is permissable. You just need to be careful. If the original author asks us to remove your news item, we will probably comply simple to avoid any problems.
