In\naddition to the software, we also run the data centers for several online\nbrokers. I am responsible for monitoring the systems and providing reports on\nseveral levels, performance and many other things. I am expected to understand\nhow our software works with all of its various components, how they work with\nthird party products; as well as the workings of the <glossary>network<\/glossary>,\nfirewalls, Solaris, Linux, Windows 2000 and XP, perl, <glossary>shell<\/glossary>\nscripting, and so forth.\n<p>\nThere is very little here on\nmy site that does not directly relate to my job as a system\n<glossary>administrator<\/glossary>. For\nthe most part, you need to be a jack of all trades. Although Linux has come a\nlong way in the last few years and you no longer need to be a &#8220;guru&#8221; to get it\nto work, knowing how to administer your system allows you to go beyond what is\ndelivered to you out of the box.\n<p>\nIn this chapter, we\nare just going to go through the basics. We won&#8217;t necessarily be talking about\nindividual steps or processes used by the <glossary>administrator<\/glossary>,\nbut rather about functional <i>areas<\/i>.
