We sell a few laptops at Best Buy that exceed most desktops, including having something along the lines of a Nvidia Go GeForce video card and killer ram. Given that a lot of people use laptops in place of a desktop, and that the most expensive part of a laptop is the LCD screen, why don't they just make a laptop without the screen for easy home use? Then you could just add your own monitor for cheap, and have no bulky tower getting in the way. It just makes sense...of course, I have been looking at the iMac. Learning to work on a Mac is something that I am interested in, there aren't many Mac techs around here. But back to the laptop...it just makes sense...couldn't we all use less clutter?

Thoughts? Very Happy

I think there are already some mobo form factors that are supposed to save on space. They aren't as small as a laptop, but that's what they're designed for. As far as laptops go, if you do away with the attached LCD screen, you do away with the possibility of mobility. I take my laptop to work every day, but I also do alot of work on it at home. Depending on what I'm doing, I work in different parts of the house. Occasionally, I use it at the public library and other places. I could hardly do that if it didn't have the LCD screen.

What you say makes sense but instead of a screenless laptop, I'd think of it as just another computer form factor. Of course in part what makes a laptop so expensive besides the screen is squeezing all the components into such a small space and trying to keep it all cool as well.

Anyway...just some of my ramblings.

All true, all true. I get tired of kicking my tower where it sits in the floor. I am thinking more of a "desktop replacement" and not a true laptop. I, unlike you, don't take my laptop anywhere...of course, I don't own a laptop Laughing , so that doesn't really matter. I just want less clutter on my desk, and as the mobile CPUs get cooler and better, heat is less of a problem. I also have to say that, as a PC tech, I see more problems caused by the "mobility" of laptops than from heat, as people think they can just toss them around haphazardly. Usually heat damage is caused by not cleaning the fan adequately...or not at all. We've pulled enough "fluff" out of some laptops to make a pillow.

Anyway, this is the one I want...I'd even take the screen. Surprised

I guess I'll just look at some itty-bitty form factors. But at least the Qosmio has a Linux partition to play DVDs.

I wonder how much they would take off the price if a person ordered it without the junk software they put on it. Laughing Then you would have two partitions to put Linux on.... Twisted Evil

Some other folks agree with me. Razz Of course, I didn't give thought to the price, and they don't seem to have anything more than onboard graphics, but that's EXACTLY what I envisioned as far as the looks go.

Hi everybody, I am 15 years old a school student. I need laptop to keep in touch with my friends that live in Japan. My laptop has so many pictures that I have drawn and it has many stories that have made! And the reason why they said I can't have it anymore is because the think i'm "to young" for a laptop. What should I do? Can you please help me? Thanks a lot and have a nice day.

Greetings. You really could have created your own thread instead of "piggy backing" on this one (especially, since it's quite old). Not sure what you want help with or why you've asked for help in a Linux forum? I'm also not sure who "they" are (parents, teachers?). We certainly can't provide you with a laptop. What did you have in mind?

You're welcomed to visit my website (signature)
-> retailers
-> Linux pre-installed vendors (including laptops)

This long list includes desktop as well so ignore them.
