Just got the ASUS Eee PC (bad news first) they cut a deal with Xandros and made adding new software almost impossible. Got a friend of mine to unlock the real Xandros desktop. Still trying to get some software to work after it has been installed. Wanted to play that Scorched 3D Tank game (couldn't get it to work).

I also play the board game Go... A lot of programmers are into the Go because it is so simple and complex. No one has written a program that can beat a pro in an even game yet. They are getting close but still have a long way to go. here are some web sites about Go. www.usgo.org or www.kiseido.com
Went to a Tournament in LA but only won one game out of five this year. Saw a pro giving a program 8 handicap... and one of the other programs was playing at my level. Liked a lot of the women... Akane was really kute she wore are Kimono.

Need to fix up a lot of my old computer and may try out some of the other versions of Linux. I'm thinking about learning some command line... also see there is software to learn Python (is it hard?). I can fix many hardware problems but don't really understand programming.

Wanted to know what other versions of Linux I should pick up. Got Knoppix some where (not good at spelling). Any useful magazines or books I should pick up?

Got any tips? Anything you think I should know?

Greetings, Enz0. Welcome to the Linux Tutorial. For the most part, your preferred distro is a matter of what fits for you in terms of package manager, layout, and such. I've never tried out Xandros (OK, maybe once awhile back), but I use Ubuntu everyday and am pretty happy with it. Of course, my "Linux background" is mostly using Debian, and Ubuntu is Debian based.

If you are just learning your way around Linux, pick one distro and stick with it for awhile. A bash shell is a bash shell for the most parts and it doesn't matter a great deal which distro you use (and having said that, there are a few distros that have minor exceptions). If you stick with a Debian or Red Hat based distro, you should be fine.

How hard is Python? Depends. What's your programming experience? It's supposed to be easier to learn than Perl, and a lot of Linux scripting is done in Python (well...the same can be said of Perl). If you have no programming experience at all, I suppose the learning curve will be pretty steep, but if you do, adding Python to your skill set won't be as much of a chore.

Books? We have a Linux Book Review section here on the site that might help you figure out what you might need.

Let us know if you have any more questions (sorry that I can't respond to your gaming comments...I'm an "oddball" and have never been attracted to gaming).

Cheers,

-Trip
